The similarities to the story of Moses end there. Sargaon of Akkad states that Sargan was placed in a basket in the Nile and discovered by a gardener. However, there are far more differences in the two stories than similarities. Some propose the story of Moses derived from the legend of Sargon. Then the boy’s sister approached Pharaoh’s daughter and asked her, “Should I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?” “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said. He was crying and she felt sorry for him. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her female assistant to get it. Her attendants walked along the riverbank. The Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe. The child’s sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him. She placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. Eventually she could hide him no longer, so she placed him in a papyrus basket that she had coated with tar and pitch. ![]() When the woman saw he was a fine child, she hid him away for three months. Fearful of the Israelite’s growing power, Pharaoh had issued orders to his people – every Hebrew child born must be killed. The woman became pregnant and gave birth to a son.
